Limone sul Garda - a day at Lake Garda, Italy

Writer: Tania AndreeaTania Andreea

LIMONE SUL GARDA, ONE OF THE MOST PICTURESQUE ITALIAN VILLAGES

Italy is the country I return to every time with the same joy, enthusiasm and ready to discover and be surprised by the beauty of the places. Somehow, I know that any place I visit in this country will not disappoint. Lake Garda is another one of the hundreds or thousands of gorgeous places you can visit and that will not disappoint, regardless of the season you visit.

We had only one day to visit Lake Garda and we decided to limit ourselves to enjoying one location. We had a hard time putting our finger on the map and choosing Limone sul Garda, when we had so many options. We were also eyeing Sirmione and Riva del Garda. We decided that we had some good reasons to return to this area, where we would stay at least a week to enjoy the location, without rushing.

Limone sul Garda is a small village located in the northern part of Lake Garda, at the foot of the mountains, where the beauty of the landscapes leaves no room for disappointment. Although it is not a very large town, it is a real pleasure to get lost in the labyrinth of narrow streets, with colorful houses, enjoy the ducks and swans on the lake and admire the natural landscapes, which combine very well with the architecture of the buildings.

If we've made you curious about this location, take a look at the pictures, they'll definitely convince you. But before we get to the photos, let's look at the logistical and organizational details.

HOW DO YOU GET TO LIMONE SUL GARDA?

The closest airport with the most international flights is Bergamo.

From Bergamo you have the options:

- car rental - the option we chose, arriving in this area in February, we found a very good offer at Centauro, which I recommend. We paid €10/day, plus full insurance for 4 days worth €113, which we asked for at the counter to avoid paying a deposit;

- public transport - train to Milan, then to Desenzano, then bus LN027 to Limone sul Garda;

From Verona (at the time of writing there are no direct flights from Romania to this city's airport) you can take the train to Revereto, and then the B301 bus. There is also the option of an organized trip to Lake Garda, details here .

WHERE TO STAY IN LIMONE SUL GARDA

The accommodations in this area of Italy are not the cheapest, but they are definitely worth considering, especially if you want to have spectacular views to enjoy when you look out the window. Among the options on Booking, the ones that caught my attention are:

- Hotel Villa Margherita - accommodation unit rated at 2 stars, with double or family rooms, with lake view. Depending on your preferences, you can choose a room with or without a balcony. Parking and internet are included in the booking price;

- Hotel Capo Reamol - accommodation unit with twin, double or family rooms. On the roof of the building there is a bar and a swimming pool with a view of Lake Garda. The guesthouse is very close to the lake and has a private beach. The parking price is included in the booking cost.

- Hotel Limone - two-star accommodation unit, with double rooms, which have mountain, city or lake views. It has an outdoor swimming pool and jacuzzi, parking is included in the booking price and has the option of serving breakfast.

- Hotel Le Palme - four-star accommodation with double or twin rooms. It has an outdoor swimming pool, parking and the option to serve breakfast.

ACTIVITIES AND PLACES TO VISIT IN LIMONE SUL GARDA:

A walk along the cobblestone streets is the main activity you can enjoy in this village. We already know that the town is not very big, so a walk along the streets will not take more than an hour or two. During the warmer season, most of the shops are open, so you can combine this walk with shopping, window-shopping and/or enjoying the classic gelato. The most important and, in my opinion, the most beautiful places are:

- The promenade on the lakeside, where the view is spectacular both towards the lake and towards Limone. Here you can spend more time, sitting on the edge of the lake (near the dock), on benches, or at one of the terraces or restaurants in the area;

- Garibaldi Square is one of the most photographed places in Limone, and it is also my favorite place in this small town. It is located at the end of the alley I mentioned above. Although it is not a very large square, the combination of the lake water, the artesian fountain, the terrace full of relaxed people and the alignment of high ridges behind the buildings gives the place a special atmosphere.

- The view from Torrente val di Se is one of those places I found absolutely by chance while searching for a panoramic view of the entire area. My search didn't lead to a result, or rather, to the place I was looking for, but on the way I discovered an absolutely gorgeous stream, which flows into the lake and over which a house was built.

The Limonaia del Castel is a kind of museum where information is presented on how lemons and oranges were grown in the Lake Garda area. Lemons were first brought to northern Italy from the Genoa area in the 13th century by monks from the monastery of St. Francis of Gargnan. The first greenhouses were built with columns, stairs and beams where, from November to March, glass windows were installed to protect the plants from frost. These columns can still be seen today both at this museum and throughout the town. Many of these greenhouses were built in the first half of the 18th century, and since then, Limone has been known as the "city of lemons. The entrance ticket costs 2 euros (price in 2024) and it is good to know that it is closed in winter.

The beaches in Limone sul Garda are also not to be missed, especially if you get there when it's hot outside. I don't recommend the location necessarily for swimming, or lying on the beach in the true sense of the word (although that wouldn't be a bad idea), but rather as a place where you can sit down to rest your feet with a refreshing drink, after a long day of exploring.

Spiaggia Fonte Torrente San Giovanni (Spiaggia Cola) is the most famous beach. As you might expect, being a lake beach, it is not sandy, but rather with pebbles, quite large, which is very difficult to walk on, so water shoes are mandatory if you want to enter the water and not hurt your feet. This is common to all the beaches in Limone.

Other beaches worth considering: Spiaggia per cani, Spiaggia Limone, Spiaggia via Garbera.

Ciclo Pedonale Limone - is a pedestrian and bicycle path located right on the lake shore. It currently measures only 2 km, but the authorities plan to extend it along the entire lake, thus becoming the longest bicycle path in Europe. It is the perfect place for a walk, even in the evening, as it is fully lit. During the summer it is recommended to leave this walk for later in the afternoon, as there are no shaded areas, the entire path being in direct sunlight.

Chiesa di San Rocco is a small church built in the 16th century as a sign of gratitude to God for ending the plague. Over time, the church has undergone some minor changes, but largely retains its original structure and shape.

Chiesa di San Benedetto is the parish church of the town, built on the site of another church from the 11th century. The building is simple, without architectural details that make it stand out, however it is very tall, with a tower and will be noticed at the first glance at the city.

Cascata di Sopino is a waterfall located near the village of Limone sul Garda. To get there, it is necessary to take a short hike that starts from Marconi Lakefront. The route continues on Via Nova, then on Via Sopino Alto. Most of the route is paved, and the views are worth the effort.

Punta Larici , although not in Limone and not within walking distance, I still thought I'd mention it because it's one of the locations where you can enjoy spectacular views of Lake Garda. The viewpoint is at 907 meters above sea level, and the hike there takes about an hour and a half.

If you don't have a rental car, you can opt for organized excursions with stops in several places at Lake Garda, details here .

CONCLUSIONS ABOUT LEMONE SUL GARDA AND LAKE GARDA

Limone is a town that can be visited in less than a day, if you don't want to relax on the beach or at the terrace, so if you want to explore as much as possible, you can also put Riva del Garda (which is about as big) on the same day's itinerary, especially if it's summer and the day is longer.

If you come by car, as we did, it's good to know that there is a large parking lot right at the entrance to the town, and during the winter it's free. It's called Caldogno Parking.

During this vacation, we also visited Lake Como , Bergamo and Verona .
